The story of this community is the tale of two forts. Fort Atkinson was the first U.S. military fortress west of the Missouri River. It was built in 1820. The post is now Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, and the community where it is located is Fort Calhoun. One thousand residents live here where the past is part of the future. Residents proudly proclaim their Washington County Historical Museum as the state’s oldest facility of its kind.
