Red Willow County is located east of Hitchcock County along the state’s southern border with Kansas. McCook, population 7,700, is its largest town and county seat. It’s located about 68 miles south of North Platte and is home to the Red Willow County Fair each July.
The hills, valleys, rivers and lakes of Red Willow County are teeming with wildlife. Prairie Chicken Dance Tours accommodate birdwatchers who travel from far and wide to witness the spectacle of springtime mating. The Red Willow Reservoir is a popular fishing hole.
