Scottsbluff Celtic Gathering
Looking for a reason to pull your kilt out of the closet? Head to Scottsbluff in May. The community will celebrate its Scottish and Irish heritage with other clans in the tri-state area. Tee off in a golf scramble or grab a pint in the beer garden. A parade, children’s activities, story tellers, Celtic bands, dancers and cultural reenactments will anchor events in downtown.

Swedish Steel is the latest event to draw throngs of Swedes to Stromsburg. It is the largest metal art event in Nebraska with more than 30 vendors showing and selling their creations. A blacksmith demonstrates the art of making usable items from iron. Food vendors heat up their own artistic creations. The 2017 Swedish Steel event is scheduled for May 20 in the City Square Park.

Britishfest Convention in Omaha

Master sand sculptors, 15 corporate teams and 375 tons of sand make for a sandcastle showdown of epic proportions at the Baxter Arena. Vote for the People’s Choice award or get some sand between your toes and build a castle of your own in a giant sand pile. A Kids Zone and live entertainment round out this free event. Donations of $5 per family are suggested to benefit Nebraska Children’s Home Society.

Springfield Days will be bigger than ever this year as the community celebrates Nebraska's sesquicentennial. Ice cream and runza-eating contests, a grand parade, and vendors will return to downtown. Special for this year, there will also be a pie parlor, bingo, children's activities and 1860s-era craft projects like yarn dolls. The Cherokee Ridge Runners, a living history group, will put on demonstrations and reenactments.

Martin Short and Robert Klein are two of the funny men scheduled to keep audiences in stitches during this 10th annual celebration of American comedy. The Great American Comedy Festival was founded in 2008 to honor hometown comedy hero Johnny Carson. The four-day comedy festival event brings world-class entertainment to Norfolk and preserves Carson’s memory for newer generations every June. The Johnny Carson Theatre at Norfolk Senior High School is center stage for the hilarity.

Swedish heritage comes alive for three days in June with Stromsburg’s Swedish Midsommar Festival. Residents don costumes of yellow and blue – the colors of the Swedish flag – and welcome thousands of visitors to town. Local residents really get into it.
