York County lies between Lincoln and Grand Island along the Interstate 80 corridor. The county rightly calls itself the “crossroads of the midwest.” Near the city of York, the county’s largest city and its county seat, I-80 intersects with U.S. Highway 81. From this intersection, a traveler could journey to either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, head north to Canada or south to South America. Henderson, a western York County community, still celebrates its history as a settling area for German Mennonite families from Russia in 1874.
