Red Cloud, population 1,100, is the largest town in Webster County. It’s known as the childhood home of Nebraska author Willa Cather, but it was named for the legendary Oglala Sioux Chief Red Cloud. His granddaughter’s grave is located south of town on a bluff that overlooks the Republican River.
The Willa Cather State Historic Site preserves many buildings in Red Cloud pertinent to Cather’s writing. You can tour her childhood home and visit the prairie settings she brought to life in her books.
