Otoe County is located south of Cass County along the state’s eastern border. The county’s roots run deep in state history and trees. Nebraska City, founded in 1855, is recognized as the first incorporated city in the state. It’s also where J. Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day in 1872. Apple orchards still surround his historic mansion and elsewhere throughout the region, making the county a favorite fall destination. Otoe County is also home to 9 other small towns, including Unadilla, Nebraska’s Groundhog Capital.
