Perched up on a hill, Niobrara’s 350 residents enjoy stunning views of Niobrara and Missouri rivers and an extensive wetland nicknamed the “Nebraska Everglades.”

Bands of majestic elk and herds of thundering bison once grazed these fertile grasslands. They still do at Kreycik Elk & Buffalo Ranch. Covered wagon rides give visitors close up views of the animals on the scenic ranch of Chris and the late Kennard Kreycik. These hand-fed animals seem to enjoy the attention, and visitors will leave with memories and souvenirs from the Kreycik’s gift shop. 88971 517 Ave. (402) 857-3850.

Golfers hoping for long drives can take the short drive east from Niobrara to Tatanka Golf Club at Feather Hill. Bison, known as “tatanka” in the Dakota language, graze within view of this scenic course. Respect for nature was paramount in the design of this 18-hole, par 72 course which opened in 2015. Scenic views of 30 to 40 miles outshine even the best tee shots. 53138 NE-12 (402) 857-3504.

The 1,640 rolling acres of Niobrara State Park appear much as it did when the Ponca lived and hunted here. They would likely recognize the aroma of bison meat sizzling over fiery grills during the park staff’s Saturday evening summer cookouts. Hiking, fishing, swimming, boating and horseback riding are some of the park’s other activities. Cabins and tent camping available. 89261 522 Ave. (402) 857-3373.
