Howard County is located north of Hall County in central Nebraska. St. Paul, population 2,300, is its largest community and county seat. It’s located about 25 miles north of Grand Island. Howard County is named after Union General Oliver Otis Howard.
The Howard County Historical Village in St. Paul includes historic buildings from the Howard County communities of Farwell , Cotesfield, St. Libory and St. Paul. Howard County also prides itself on baseball history. Grover Cleveland Alexander was born here. He grew up pitching around Elba and St. Paul before leaving to play professional baseball. A historical marker dedicated to the Hall of Fame pitcher stands in tribute in St. Paul City Park. Each July the county celebrates his memory with Grover Cleveland Alexander Days.
