Deep in the Sandhills is the town of Mullen, pop. 500, the only community in Hooker County. The Ogallala Aquifer feeds two recreational rivers here.

With waterfalls, swift turns, submerged logs, white water and a big spring, the Dismal is an excellent river for experienced teen-aged and adult kayakers. The Middle Loup is a wider stream providing a more leisurely family float.

Sandhills Motel rents inner tubes and livestock tanks, something called “tanking,” likely invented in Mullen. Tanking is a safe and relaxing way to float downstream while Mother Nature does the work. These stable craft take visitors through scenic views and provide close-up glimpses of mule deer, herons and other wildlife – not to mention large ranches and cattle herds. In March and April the motel leads excursions to watch the spring mating rituals of the greater prairie chickens and sharp-tail grouse. (308) 546-2206.
