Hooker County is located south of Cherry County in western Nebraska. This 721-square-mile county is located deep in the Sandhills region. Mullen, population 500, is the county’s only community and is located about 70 miles north of North Platte.

Named after Civil War General Joseph Hooker, the county is home to the Dismal and Middle Loup rivers. In the spring, the mating rituals of the greater prairie chickens and sharp-tail grouse draw many birdwatching enthusiasts. In the summer, kayaking, tubing and tanking are popular. Visitors can float and paddle through scenic views that provide close-up glimpses of mule deer, herons and other wildlife – not to mention large ranches and cattle herds. The local Sand Hills Motel serves as a starting point for these unique Hooker County adventures.
