The Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice pays homage to the Homestead Act of 1862. With a roof that emulates a plow and a precise one-acre parking lot, the monument is an educational reminder of how this historic legislation helped settled the West, 160 acres at a time.
The monument is located on the homestead site of Daniel Freeman, one of the first to apply for “free land.” Legend has it Freeman filed his homestead claim at the land office in Brownville 10 minutes after the law went into effect on January 1, 1863.
