The only remaining fragment of the Native American bow that Broken Bow is named for is preserved at the Custer County Museum. The nearly treeless sand hills provided little wood for pioneers in the early days of Custer County. Sod was abundant. Solomon Butcher photographed sod homes and their families in the late 1800s. The museum features a gallery of his images.
