The Platte River Valley has long been home to the spring migration of sandhill cranes. Visitors from around the world flock in to see thousands of the large grey birds. Biologists from the Crane Trust study the ecology of the Platte River while the Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center near Wood River educates the public in its state-of-the-art facility. Taxidermy animal mounts, interactive displays and presentations teach about the unique wildlife spectacle of the crane migration. Watching the bison herd is a fun activity here, and guided crane tours in March and April take visitors to riverside blinds under the cover of darkness for close-up views. Trails, an observation tower and pedestrian bridges add to the adventure.
